Images

Image size and formatting:

  • JPEG format only
  • Minimum native resolution is 1000x1000 pixels, maximum is 10,000x10,000 pixels
  • Minimum pixel density of 72 DPI/PPI (dots/pixels per inch)
  • Do not "scale up" an image to meet resolution requirements
  • Image must be square
  • No special characters or spaces (use “_”) in filenames
  • Filenames have a 40-character limit and must include “.jpg”
  • Filenames should be unique and descriptive

Primary image:

  • PRODUCT ONLY on a white (Hex Code: #FFFFFF) background (see below for exceptions)

  • No text, calls to action, or badges/watermarks
  • Product should be shown out of packaging (exceptions for products that are typically displayed in their packaging, such as liquids)
  • Why a white background?
    • According to statistics, 76% of seven million product images have a plain white background
    • Product images render in areas as small as 16 x 16 mm on mobile screens, so they need to be extra-legible. This is especially true when it comes to remarketing campaigns as the primary image is leveraged
    • Customers also tend to remember product details from one to the next in a minimalist setting
    • It is best to minimize other visual elements in a product photo other than the product itself
    • A plain white background levels the playing field when it comes to colour
    • Industry standard for e-commerce websites
  • When should you use a colour-matched background instead of white?
    • Some pre-tinted substances' primary image should display the products' container on a background that matches the tint
    • In such cases, the container should be positioned in the bottom-left corner of the image, and its width should not exceed more than half of the total image's width (i.e. the width of the container should be less than 500 pixels in a 1000 pixel-wide image) unless noted below for certain sizes of paint, stain, and sealer

  •  Product categories that require colour-matched background on their primary image:
    • Spray paint or any pre-tinted paint or pigment
    • Stains and finishes
    • Tile grout
    • Caulk and tinted sealants

Primary Image Guidelines for Paint, Stain, and Sealer Products:

  • Paint, stain, and sealer containers should be photographed from a slightly raised angle, to show the top of the lid (see example images below)
  • Paint, stain, and sealers come in several sizes and the primary images should reflect the differences in those sizes – please ensure the spacing guidelines to each side of the container listed below are followed exactly

Un-tinted (Centered on White Background)

  • Containers of clear or un-tinted products should always be centered in the image (both vertically and horizontally) with equal white space on opposite sides and should be pictured on a white background:

Tinted (Bottom-Left Orientation with Colour-Matched Background)

  • Containers of stains and other tinted products should be placed in the bottom-left corner on a colour-matched background (see above guidelines re: colour-matched backgrounds):

Best Practice and Other Images:

  • At least 3 images are recommended for each product (10 max is sufficient)
  • Images should be focused on product features and usability. The image carousel should not be home to badging and marketing banners
  • Other images in the carousel should include the following:
    • Lifestyle images of the product in use or in a staged environment
    • Scale (includes line drawings)
    • Close-up images of important details
    • Package shot
    • Group/collection shot
    • Images should not include people or pets
    • It’s recommended that there is no text on any image (absolutely no text is allowed on the primary image), however, if you do include text on a non-primary image, it must be bilingual (English and French on the same image). This is mandatory.
