Synthetic and Imitation Materials

If the product’s finish, colouring, or texture is meant to imitate a natural or otherwise high-quality, desirable material, the Product Name must make it clear that the product is made from synthetic or imitation material. And where appropriate, should list the actual material used.

Follow these general guidelines:

  • For furniture and other decorative pieces, the word “faux” should precede the imitated material. Examples:
    • Faux Marble Resin Coffee Table
    • Faux Leather Vinyl Upholstery
    • Faux Fur Throw Cushion
  • For tile, plank flooring, wall panels, etc., the word “look” should be appended to the imitated material. Examples:
    • Granite Look Ceramic Tile
    • Natural Maple Look Engineered Flooring
  • For fabric items imitating rigid materials or other fabrics, the word “print” should be appended to the imitated material. Examples:
    • Denim Print Placemat
    • Marble Print Polyester Curtain
  • Exception: Products which clearly state their material in their name (such as wallpaper) do not need to call out the imitation, particularly when there is no possible way to make the product out of the imitated material. Example:
    • Marble Wallpaper
